In October 2016, Katena Products, Inc., a global-leader in specialty surgical and consumable ophthalmic products, acquired the EagleVision brand and products.

EagleVision was formed in 1983 by Jerre Minor Freeman, MD, a leading ophthalmologist and surgeon. In his practice Dr. Freeman had realized the prevalence of the dry eye problem and the lack of solutions for it. Dr. Freeman invented and patented the EagleVision-Freeman Punctum Plug in 1976, and EagleVision was formed to market the Punctum Plug and other dry eye products after FDA approval of the plug was obtained in 1984.

The plug, the smallest medical-grade silicone-molded product in the world, is used primarily in the treatment of Dry Eye Syndrome (Keratoconjunctivitis sicca), a condition which is often referred to as the most under-diagnosed ophthalmic condition. Many aspects of modern life and technology, such as increased contact lens wear, air-conditioned environments, and video display terminals all contribute to and may exacerbate an otherwise mild, unproblematic dry eye state.

The normal aging process brings changes in meibomian gland function and tear composition causing a large number (possibly approaching 80% of elderly patients) to exhibit dry eye symptoms to a significant degree. As the number and percentage of the population over age 60 increases, the demand for proper Dry Eye management increases correspondingly. This rapidly increasing population segment coupled with increased doctor and patient awareness of the Dry Eye condition, as well as the other susceptible populations mentioned earlier, have created a great demand for EagleVision punctum plugs and other products designed for the diagnosis and management of the Dry Eye condition.

Katena manufactures and markets an extensive line of surgical instruments, biologics and medical devices to physician offices, hospitals, and surgical centers through a USA sales force. Katena products are also sold in over 110 countries world-wide through an extensive distributor network. EagleVision products will join the Katena sales channel both in the USA and global markets.

Katena Products, Inc. and its parent company Katena Holdings, are owned by Audax Group, a Boston-based firm. Audax Group is a leading investor in middle market companies, which currently manages over $9.0 billion of assets through our private equity, mezzanine debt, and private senior debt businesses.
